Teaching Interests

Emerging technologies; organizational decision-making aided by algorithms; adoption/deployment of analytics system, AI/ML and algorithmic-based systems more generally. Ethical and DEI implications of algorithmic systems.

Research Interests

Social media engagement; algorithmic decision-making systems and ethical/DEI implications; metaverse; (problematic) access to technology and healthcare by underrepresented populations.

Bio

I am a Professor of Computer Information Systems at Bentley University where I currently teach grad courses on business analytics; PhD classes on information systems theories and qualitative methods.

My research focuses on the DEI implications stemming from the use of emerging technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, the metaverse) in organizations and society and the reasons behind institutional inertia in addressing potential misuses of algorithms. I am currently studying automatic (algorithmic-led) decision-making processes in large organizations and negative effects for underrepresented populations. I am also interested in the future deployment of the metaverse, the platform’s privacy implications and its potential to exacerbate surveillance and discriminatory practices. In the past three years I conducted COVID-related research concerning access to care disparities (in the US) and unequal availability of vaccines (US and worldwide). You can read the paper here

Current projects (not inclusive list):

- study on how hybrid scientific gatherings can promote DEI, despite downsides associated with higher costs for organizers

- study on the role of training data in AI/ML contexts in designing and implementing fair systems that minimize discriminations

- two studies on the DEI implications of the metaverse: one concerning businesses and society; the other concerning evaluation metrics in large organizations

- book (monograph) on the role of classification systems in AI/ML contexts, and they DEI implications (forthcoming in the fall/winter 2023)
