Bio

Professor of English and Media Studies and EMS Coordinator for Creative Industries major, Jennifer Gillan has been a Faculty Fellow with the National Association of Television Production Executives; the American Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation; the International Radio and Television Society Foundation’s Disney Impact Summit; the University of Warwick’s Institute for Advanced Study, “Paratextual Memory” Thought Leadership Network; the Freie Universität Berlin’s Collaborative Research Centre; the UCLA Film and Television Archive; and Bentley’s Valente Center for the Arts and Sciences. Her forthcoming scholarly monograph is Disney+ Reassembled: Lessons Learned from Netflix, Marvel, and Pixar Branding. It is a sequel to Television Brandcasting, her book focused on content and promotion at Disney ABC Television of the 1950s and 2010s. She is also author of Television and New Media: Must-Click TV, an often-cited television studies monograph on the rise of web tie-ins with broadcast TV in the 1990s-2000s. She is working on a book on television set design and fashion, which builds on her article on Pinterest and Textural Poaching Twin Peaks, which appeared in Series: The International Journal of Serial Narratives. Her other articles were published in Cinema Journal, American Literature, American Drama, African American Review, Arizona Quarterly, Mosaic, Columbia Journal of Gender and the Law, Duke Journal of Gender, Law, and Policy, Louisiana Literature, Journal of American History, and North Dakota Quarterly, among others. She has book chapters in The Franchise Era, Understanding Reality TV, Great American Makeover, Reading Makeover Television, Teen Television, Bloom’s Modern Critical Interpretations: Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, and Analyzing Mad Men, among others. She was keynote speaker at Dast Ist Fern Sehen! (That’s Television!) Conference co-sponsored by University of Regensburg (Germany) and Utrecht University (Netherlands) and has given papers at many international conferences. She has been a frequent presenter at her main professional organization, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, mostly recently in 2023. In 2022, she created multimedia presentations for the virtual conferences of International Screen Studies Association (Edinburgh) and The Screen Studies Association of Australia and Aoteaora New Zealand.
