Bio
Juliet F. Gainsborough is a professor of political science at Bentley University and the Department Chair for Global Studies. She received her Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University. Before joining the faculty at Bentley, Professor Gainsborough taught in the political science department at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Her research interests include urban and regional politics, suburban political behavior, and the politics of social policy. Her work has appeared in such journals as the Urban Affairs Review, Policy Studies Journal, Journal of Urban Affairs, and American Politics Research. Professor Gainsborough is the author of two books: Fenced off: The Suburbanization of American Politics (Georgetown University Press 2001), which looks at the way population movement to the suburbs has shaped national politics, and Scandalous Politics: Child Welfare Policy in the States (Georgetown University Press 2010), which explores the way scandals affect child welfare policymaking at the state and national level. Professor Gainsborough was also a member of the Network on Building Resilient Regions (http://brr.berkeley.edu), funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. As a member of the Network, her research explored the way in which fast-growth metropolitan areas respond to regional challenges, with a focus on transportation planning in Orlando and Miami. She is currently working on research related to state politics and higher education policy.
