Bio

Danielle Blanch Hartigan, PhD, MPH is Executive Director of the Center for Health and Business and Chester B. Slade Professor of Psychology in the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences at Bentley University in Waltham, MA. Dr. Blanch Hartigan holds a PhD in Psychology from Northeastern University, an MPH from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and completed postdoctoral training as a Cancer Prevention Fellow in the Behavioral Research Program and Office of Cancer Survivorship at the National Cancer Institute.

Danielle Blanch Hartigan, PhD, MPH is social scientist with interdisciplinary research and teaching interests in psychology and public health. Her research, broadly defined, aims to understand how psychological constructs influence the powerful relationship between healthcare providers and patients to foster patient-centered care and to improve patient perceptions of their care. She studies how patients and providers use verbal and nonverbal behavior to form impressions and how these perceptions are influenced by interpersonal characteristics. She also examines empathy in clinical contexts, with recent research exploring the role of generative AI in empathic communication. Dr. Blanch Hartigan’s research employs a variety of methodologies including virtual reality, nonverbal coding, and vignette-based experimental methods.

Dr. Blanch Hartigan has published over 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals across psychology, health communication, and medicine. Her work has been presented at over 100 national and international conferences. She has given workshops and presentations on clinical communication for academic institutions, hospital systems, and Fortune 100 healthcare companies. She is the recipient of a Citation Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine, a National Institutes of Health Merit Award, and in 2020, was named one of the 40 Under 40 in Cancer.
