Bio

I am an Assistant Professor in the Information and Process Management department, at Bentley University. My research philosophy involves a critical and practice-based approach to social dynamics associated with knowledge management and innovation, mostly at the network level. My primary focus is on the use, in practice, of various IT artifacts in the workplace. Several years ago, I approached this research topic by studying challenges associated with large-scale enterprise system implementation and its everyday use in various organizational departments. In 2010, I began to focus on knowledge sharing and coordination in the healthcare domain, and on how large health systems (i.e., electronic medical record systems) influence both healthcare efficiency (costs) and effectiveness (quality). I conducted several exploratory studies in the US, UK and Canada, mainly concentrating on how knowledge is mobilized across healthcare practices. More recently, I started to be interested in how emerging technologies (revolving around big data and algorithms) are implemented and used in various settings. I embrace the assumption that algorithms at the workplace might pose ethical issues, if not supervised properly. I am the principal investigator (PI) and recipient of three research grants (2016, 2017, 2018) for leading a research initiative on the ethical implications of doing research with big data. I was also the recipient of several Best Paper Proceedings (Academy of Management Meeting) in the Organization, Communication and Information Systems (OCIS) and Organization and Management Theory (OMT) Divisions, in addition to the best published paper of the year (2013) in the International Journal of Managing Projects in Business. I am currently undertaking an ethnographic study at a local healthcare network (Boston) where I attempt to identify strengths and weaknesses of algorithms in the healthcare domain - from a clinical/diagnosis as well as from a performance management perspective. During my employment at Bentley, I was able to publish my work in a variety of IS, management and communication outlets. This publication trajectory reflects the interdisciplinary nature of my research. My work appeared (among other journals) in Organization Studies, the International Journal of Management Reviews, the Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, Information & Management, Industry & Innovation, and Communication of the Association for Information Systems. I also published several proceedings in what I believe are the most prestigious conferences in my field (e.g., ICIS, ECIS, AMCIS, AOM, CSCW, ICWSM and EGOS), some of which I attend on a yearly basis. At Bentley, I teach undergraduate courses on business processes and systems and the "IT, Communication and Networks" module in the Bentley MBA. I also hold a joint appointment at the University of Warwick, in the UK, in the Information Systems Management (ISM) group, having been previously a Research Fellow in the Organization Studies department. Since 2010 I have supervised over 40 Master students' dissertations on various IS and management topics. I am the sitting CIO and secretary of the OCIS Division of the Academy of Management, having been a member of the OCIS executive committee since 2015. I am also the founder and tenured editor of the OCIS newsletter.
